Benedict Cumberbatch Gi'es Sharp Rebuke T' Julian Assange Over ‘Hired Gun’
Published October 11, 2013 | By Business Insider
“Thar Fifth Estate”
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange begged actor Benedict Cumberbatch not t'portray him in thar upcomin' mo'ie, “T' Fifth Estate,” which Wikileaks has called a mass propaganda attack.  Some excerpts from his letter:
“Ye will be used, as a hired gun, t'assume yonder appearance o'thar truth in order t'assassinate it. T' present me as someone morally compromised an' t'place me in a falsified history. T' create a work, not o'fiction, but o'debased truth.
“Not because ye want t', o'course ye don’t, but because, in yonder end, ye be a jobbin' actor who gets paid t'follow t'script, no matter how debauched.
“Yer skills play into thar hands o'people who be out t'remo'e me an' WikiLeaks from thar world.
Tonight Cumberbatch responded in a Reddit Ask Me Anythin'. While he clearly respects Assange, he does not take kindly t'bein' called a “hired gun.” See t'question an' his answer below [emphasis ours]:
nam5465:
Julian Assange’s open letter t'ye criticizin' T' Fifth Estate be very intense. He even goes so far as t'call ye a “hired gun” fer distortin' thar truth (or at least wha' he views as his truth). Did this affect thar way ye portrayed him or even make ye second guess yer role at all in this film?
BenedictCumberbatch:
Yarr, o'course it did. T' have thar man ye be about t'portray ask ye intelligently an' politely not t'do it gave me real cause fer concern, howe'er, it gal'anized me into addressin' why I was doin' this mo'ie. He accuses me o'bein' a “hired gun” as if I am an easily bought cypher fer right win' propaganda. Not only do I NOT operate in a moral vacuum but this was not a pay day fer me at all. I’ve worked far less hard fer more financial reward. This project was important t'me because o'thar integrity I wanted t'brin' t'pro'ocative difficult but ultimately timely an' a truly important figure o'our modern times. T' idea o'makin' a mo'ie about someone who so far remo'ed from my likeness or situation who brought about an ideal through personal sacrifice that has changed yonder way we view both social media, thar power o'thar indi'idual t'have a voice in that space, an' be able t'question both ye hypocrisies an' wrongdoin's o'organizations an' bodies o'powerful people that rule our li'es… This resonated deeply wi' my beliefs in ci'il liberty, a healthy democracy, an' t'human rights o'both communities an' indi'iduals t'question those in authority. I belie'e that t'film, quite clearly, illuminates thar great successes o'wikileaks an' its extraordinary founder Julians Assange. As well as, examinin' thar personalities in'olved an' wha' become a dysfunctional relationship within that organization. While t'legacy o'his actions an' thar organizations continue t'e'olve an' only history will be yonder true judge o'where this be leadin' us. Yonder Fifth Estate be a powerful, if dramatized, entry point fer a discussion about this extraordinary lurch forward in our society. I wanted t'create a three dimensional portrait o'a man far more maligned in t'abloid press than he be in our film t'remind people that he be not jus' ye weird, white haired Australian dude wanted in Sweden, hidin' in an embassy behind Harrods. But a true force t'be reckoned wi', achie'ed ye realization o'ye great ideal. I’m proud t'be in'olved in tacklin' such a contentious character an' script. Thar be only personal truth in my opinion, an' t'film should pro'oke debate an' not consensus. It should be enjoyable an' ultimately empowerin' t'realize that Julian has spearheaded a mo'ement that be thar foundations stone o'Thar Fifth Estate, people journalism an' wha' that be capable o'includin' findin' out ye “truth” fer yerself.
“Ye Fifth Estate” hails out Oct. 18. Cumberbatch has pre'iously starred in thar BBC’s “Sherlock” an' “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
